Theodore Labonte’s Hemlock Contracting and Sustainable Decks are off to a great start in 2025. In just the first quarter of the year, a lot has already changed. Labonte says customers are leaving these home renovation trends in the past:
All-White Designs

Gone are the days of overusing white walls, white cabinetry and even white countertops. While this all-white design was a slick look just a couple of years ago, Theodore Labonte and his crew at Hemlocking Contracting are noticing: all-white is out! Customers are leaning more towards warm tones, subtle contrasts and natural materials in their home designs.
Large Kitchen Islands
Oversized islands are out, too. Fewer customers are requesting such a statement piece these days, explains Theodore Labonte. He assumes that this is due to rising lumber prices. But there could be a more social reason for the choice. An oversized island can bring inefficiency into an otherwise bustling kitchen space, for those customers who live and love in their kitchen.
Open Concept Floor Plans
Surprisingly, less and less people are interested in the open concept floor plan. In some ways, this seems to contradict the above lack of desire for large kitchen islands. With more and more people working and learning from home since COVID-19, it’s possible that customers are simply more interested in designating more private spaces throughout their homes and common areas.
Dismissing Historic Details
Coinciding with the lack of washing out character with all-white designs, dismissing historic details of a home is also out! Theodore Labonte is noticing a trend of customers who are interested in highlighting historic details of their homes, rather than hiding these features away.
